Tubular Type and Probe Type Flow-through Carbonate Ion Selective Electrodes for L-Malate Determination in Flow Injection Analysis

Abstract
Two kinds of the novel flow-through carbonate ion selective electrodes (ISEs), probe type, were developed for the potentiometric L-malate determination in flow injection analysis. The basic responses of the ISEs to carbonate selectivity and the efficiency of the ISEs to measurement using immobilized malic enzyme (EC 1.1.1.40) were evaluated. The lower limit of measurement for carbonate ion in the tubular type flow-through ISE was 10^(-10)M Ma©üCO©ý and that in the probe type flow-through ISE was 10^(-4)M Ma©üCO©ý. They showed high linear relationship with r=-0.97 in the tubular type flow-through ISE and with r=-0.90 in the probe type flow-through ISE. For the L-malate determination the tubular type carbonate ISE detected effectively 10^(-1)-10^(-4)M of malate (r=-0.90) while the probe type carbonate ISE did 10^(-1)-10^(-3)M of malate (r=-0.91). Both of the carbonate ISEs showed good linearity at relatively high concentration of malate (10^(-1)-10^(-3)M).
